Volvo Cars announced that it will begin building automobiles in the U.S.A. for the first time in its history.

The new factory will be located in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Just outside of Charleston. The location takes advantage of the port in Charleston, which supports many European-based automakers. It provides an easy transfer sea port from Volvo's main Swedish operations. The Port of Charleston will also enable exports to other Volvo markets around the world. The plant is projected to build 100,000 units per year of the next generation S60 sedan.

Construction has begun on the new factory. The first units should run down the new assembly line by late 2018. This signifies the first Volvo factory in North America since the Halifax, Nova Scotia plant closed in 1998.
