Volvo Does it Again: Pain-Free, Ergonomic Seats

Ergonomic is defined as:

1.  :an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely -- called also biotechnology, human engineering, human factors

2.  :the design characteristics of an object resulting especially from the application of the science of ergonomics

-- er-go-nom-ic  adjective
-- er-go-nom-i-cal-ly  adverb
-- er-gon-o-mist noun

We've been hearing a lot about ergonomics over the years, in this digital age, as we do a lot of sitting at our laptop desks. Because of that, seats, desks, luggage and keyboards have been designed for the consumer to have safer, efficient and healthier day-to-day usage.

So, it should come as no surprise when Volvo comes out with its own ergonomic seating in the recently-debuted, Volvo S60. Just as you need a comfortable seat at your desk, you also need a comfortable seat in your Volvo.

However, you need more than just comfort, now, as many Volvo owners are driving many miles on the nation's roads. You need a driver's and passenger's' seat that won't harm your back and spine.

Studies have shown that a number of factors can cause back pain in regular drivers:

  1. poor driving posture
  2. difficulty operating controls
  3. low driver visibility (twisting and stretching to see)
  4. personal factors such as fitness, weight, and hobbies
With this in mind, the 2015 Volvo S60's seating does the following:

  1. It supports the back for long distance driving.
  2. It has lumbar (lower back) support reducing the twisting and weight bearing on the back.
  3. Reduces lower back pain from long-distance driving.
  4. Allows a better view of the dashboard, windows and passengers.
Kelly Blue Book says this about the seating:

"One of the most enduring attractions for Volvos has been their comfortable and highly supportive seats, and the 2015 S60 maintains that reputation, with T5 and T6 sedans fitted with standard sports-inspired seats that are engineered and built for the long-haul ride. Heated seats are available for both front and rear occupants."

Ergonomic seating is just another enduring example of how Volvo seeks to provide, through tested innovations, a more comfortable, safe and even healthy riding experience for its consumers.
